We recently collaborated with African Wildlife Conservation Fund, the Department of Veterinary Services and local community leaders, to conduct a 10-day rabies campaign in our surrounding communities. Community members were invited to bring their dogs and cats to receive free vaccination against rabies as well as Canine Distemper, Canine Parvoviral Enteritis, Canine Adenovirus type 2, Canine Para-Influenza and Canine Hepatitis at 27 designated locations within the community. Animals with wounds or parasites (internal or external) were also offered treatment. Over 2,000 animals were vaccinated.

While the campaign is aimed primarily at human and domestic animal welfare, there will be a significant positive spin-off for our wildlife since many diseases spread between domestic and wild animals. Control of these diseases is particularly important for our rarer carnivores that are vulnerable to disease related population crashes.
