Girl Child Empowerment Camp

About Empowerment Camp

The Girl Child Empowerment Camp is a bi-annual initiative hosted at Hakamela Camp through a partnership between Malilangwe and the Girl Child Empowerment Trust (GCET), an organisation dedicated to developing young women who are confident, socially adjusted, and economically empowered. Held during the April and August school holidays, the camp brings together girls from neighbouring primary and secondary schools for a transformative programme designed to equip them with knowledge, confidence, and practical life skills. Guided by the theme, “It’s better to build a girl than to repair a woman,” the camp creates a safe and inspiring space where girls can learn, connect, and grow.

What We Teach

Hosted at Hakamela Camp’s conference centre and gardens, the programme combines daily lectures, workshops, and group interaction in an environment that encourages reflection and participation. Each camp welcomes girls selected from surrounding community schools and introduces them to guest speakers and mentors from a range of professional backgrounds. Sessions focus on self-awareness, reproductive and personal health, puberty, menstruation and feminine hygiene, the effects of HIV/AIDS, breast and cervical cancer awareness, emotional and mental wellness, bullying, social etiquette, and the importance of education. The girls also receive guidance in career planning, leadership, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and other life skills that support resilience, independence, and future success.

Grounded in faith, culture, and national development goals, the camp helps girls build confidence, strengthen their sense of identity, and understand their rights. By creating opportunities for meaningful discussion and mentorship, the programme nurtures leadership, encourages positive decision-making, and empowers participants to shape hopeful, self-directed futures. It is an investment not only in individual girls, but also in stronger families and communities.

Reinforcing our commitment to empowering the girl child through education, culture, and sport, Malilangwe launched the inaugural Girl Child Netball Tournament in June 2025. The event brings together 12 schools and provides a vibrant platform for girls to showcase their talent, teamwork, confidence, and creativity.
