Conservation Education Course

About The Programme

Malilangwe’s Conservation Education courses – which are created, funded and instructed by employees of Malilangwe – are designed to instil an appreciation for wildlife, conservation, sustainability, environmental processes, cultural heritage, and equip young students with a range of life skills.

The programme, which began in 2012, is aimed at Grade 6 students (ages 11 to 15 years) from 11 government schools in Malilangwe’s neighbouring communities. For many of the students, the course offers first time wildlife encounters as well as the opportunity to experience environmental processes in the field that have previously been studied in the classroom.

Course Content

Hakamela Camp hosts these classes, which typically have 25 students per group and are held approximately 25 times a year. The programme includes four days of presentations, practical lessons, game drives, site inspections of Malilangwe’s facilities and a visit to Kambako Living Museum of Bushcraft. At the end of each course every child interprets what they have learnt through a performance of drama, song or poetry recital, and in turn, receives a certificate of attendance from The Malilangwe Trust.

Rhino Soccer Trophy Tournament

This annual soccer tournament, which was started in 2018, is a segway between conservation and sport. The schools who participate in our conservation education classes play in the tournament to compete for the Rhino Soccer Trophy.

The tournament is an outlet for children to have fun, while still learning about conservation, and is a collaboration between our Neighbour Outreach team, Malilangwe Scouts and our local communities.

Participating teams and players win various prizes, which are sponsored by Malilangwe and the grand prize for the winning team is two nights stay at Hakamela Camp.
